Printing from your laptop

Students, staff and faculty are able to print to some of the cluster printers on campus (see the printer locations table below). These printers are in the managed printing program. Jobs will remain in the print queue for one hour and the job will need to be released using the release station next to the printer. To print via the campus wireless network, a secure wireless connection is needed. Please see ITS's Wireless Security web page for directions on how to do this.

Note:
To locate your print job on the release stations; you will need to know your computer name and it should be unique.

To find your computer name:

Windows XP and 2000:

  1. Click Start and right click on the My Computer icon
  2. Select Properties
  3. Click Computer Name
    1. If you need to change your computer name
    2. Click Change to change you computer to a different name
    3. Type in a new computer name (example: Petes_Computer)
    4. Click OK
  4. Click OK to finish
  5. If you changed your computer name you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect

Windows Vista:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click System and Maintenance
  4. Click System
  5. Click See the name of this Computer
    1. If you need to change the name of your computer, click Change Settings
    2. A new window will be displayed. Here you can rename your computer
    3. Click Apply
    4. Click OK

Mac OS X:

Your computer name will be the DNS name your computer was assigned when you connect to the campus network (ie, dyn57-125.res-hall.ndsu.nodak.edu). This name may change each time you connect to the campus network or as you move around campus.

  1. Open Finder
  2. Click on Networks
  3. Click on Servers
    1. Your computer name will be listed there.

Printer Setup:

Windows XP and 2000:

  1. Go to Start and Settings and Printers and Faxes
  2. Double Click Add Printer
  3. Click Next
  4. Check Local Printer, click Next
    1. Uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
  5. Click Next
  6. Under Select a Printer Port choose Create a New Port
  7. In the Type of port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, click Next
  8. The TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard will come up, click Next
  9. Add a Port
    1. In the Printer Name or IP address box type goprint.ndsu.nodak.edu
    2. In the Port Name box type in the Port Name (see printer locations table below)
    3. Click Next
    4. If asked about additional port information required, choose Standard Network Card or Generic Network Card
    5. Click Next
    6. Click Finish
  10. When prompted to choose the printer type, choose printer type from the list or go to hp.com and download the drivers for the printer (see table below). Download driver versions PCL.
  11. Click Next
  12. In the name field you can change it to something that will allow you to recognize which printer it is.
  13. Click Next
  14. If prompted to share: Do not share
  15. When prompted to print a test page set it to NO. There are more steps to complete.
  16. Click Next
  17. Click Finish
  18. Right click on the printer that you just made and select Properties
    1. Click the Ports tab
      1. Click on Port Name that was created to highlight it (keep checked)
      2. Click Configure port
      3. Under Protocol check LPR
      4. Under LPR settings click LPR Byte Count Enabled
      5. Type in the printer queue name of the printer to connect to (see printer locations table below)
      6. Click OK and OK/Close

Windows Vista:

  1. Go to Start Menu
    1. Click Control Panel
      1. Click Add a Printer at the top of the window
  2. Click Add a Local Printer
    1. Click Create a New Port
      1. Select Standard TCP/IP Port
      2. Click Next
  3. Make sure that the Device Type is Standard TCP/IP Port
    1. In the Printer Name or IP address box type goprint.ndsu.nodak.edu
    2. In the Port Name box type in the Port Name (see printer locations table below)
    3. Click Next
    4. If asked about additional port information required, choose Standard Network Card or Generic Network Card
    5. Click Next
  4. Select Manufacturer and printer from the list provided in Windows, Match them up with the printer list at the bottom of this page.
  5. Click Next
  6. Name the printer something that you will remember
  7. Click Next
  8. Select Do Not Share Printer
  9. Click Next
  10. Do not print a test page
  11. Click Finish

Mac OS X:

  1. Start System Preferences. This can be found either in your dock or in the apple menu
  2. Click on Print & Fax
  3. In the Print & Fax control panel you will see a list of printers with a + and a - sign below. Click on the + sign and a new window will pop open
  4. Make sure that the IP Printer tab is selected at the top
    1. Set protocol to Line Printer Daemon from the drop down menu
    2. In the address field type goprint.ndsu.nodak.edu
    3. In the queue field put the queue for the printer you want to use (see table below)
    4. In the name field you can change it to something that will allow you to recognize which printer it is
    5. The location field can be left black or filled in with the location of the printer
    6. The print using field should automatically be set to Generic PostScript Printer and if its not choose the option from the drop down box
  5. Click the add button and your ready to print

Note: If you want to print to any printer not listed, contact the Help Desk. If a problem exists with the printing output, a current printer driver maybe needed. Please visit www.hp.com for the most current printer drivers. PCL drivers are recommended.
