This document tells you how to "install" a printer
in Windows using the IP protocol. This does not include Novell
printers or local printers that connect via cables such as USB.
In order to add an IP printer to Windows, you will need to know
what the IP address is. For information on how to determine the IP
address, please read the Determine
Printer IP Address document.
- Go to Start > Printers and
Faxes (if you have the classic Start Menu, go to Start
> Settings > Printers and Faxes).
- At the left side under "Printer Tasks," click on Add
a Printer.
- The Add Printer Wizard will begin. Click
Next on the first screen.
- On the next screen, verify that the Local printer
attached to this computer radio button is selected.
- Verify that the Automatically detect and install ... is
not checked.
- Click Next.

- On the Select a Printer Port screen, select the
Create a new port radio button.
- Change the pull-down for Type of port to Standard
TCP/IP Port.
- Click Next.

- The Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard will begin in a
new window. Click Next on the first
screen.
- On the next screen, enter the Printer name or IP address in
the Printer Name or IP Address box. This must be a complete IP
address, such as 134.129.123.123 or hp123_printer.ndsu.nodak.edu,
not a nickname you have for the printer.
- Leave the Port Name box with the default values
(automatically entered for you).
- Click Next.

- On the last screen of the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port
Wizard, click Finish.
- You will be returned to the Add Printer Wizard, where you
will be prompted to select a printer model. This information
should be printed on the outside of the printer. It will be
something such as HP 4050N. Select the appropriate driver from
the list
- OR Click Have Disk if you downloaded a
driver from the printer manufacturer's web site.
- Browse to the location of the driver you downloaded.
- Click Next.

- On the next screen, you will be prompted to select a name for
this printer. Enter it into the Printer Name box. Please note
that this is the location you enter a nickname for your printer,
such as "Office Printer," "Color Printer," or "Room 123
Printer."
- Also you must indicate whether this should be used as the
default printer. If you want print-outs to automatically go to
this printer, select Yes.
- Click Next.
- On the next screen you can select whether a test page should
be printed. This is optional.
- Click Next.
- On the final page of the Add Printer Wizard, click
Finish.
- In the Printers and Faxes window, the new printer will be
shown. It will also be a printer listed in applications where
you print.
