Install/Migrate Outlook

This document tells you how to install and configure the Microsoft Outlook email client to check your NDSU e-mail.

To install Outlook, you will need to obtain the installer program either from your Microsoft Office installation CD or by checking out the installation media through ITS (if it was ordered through the ITS Software Licensing program).

  1. Migrate Outlook data if setting up a new computer or re-installing Outlook:

    If you do not have any data to save, skip to step 3.

  2. Before reformatting the old computer or re-installing Outlook, export the Outlook data to a .pst file.
  3. In Outlook, go to File > Import and Export.

  4. Select Export to a file on the first screen of the Import and Export Wizard and clickNext.
  5. On the next screen, select Personal Folder File (.pst) and click Next.
  6. On the next screen, select Personal Folders and check the Include subfolders checkbox. This will save all calendar entries, contacts, and mail items stored locally in Personal Folders. Click Next.

  7. On the next screen you will be prompted to select a destination for the exported data. Click on the Browse button to browse to a location. The Desktop is suggested for ease of use later on.
  8. If selecting a unique name for the .pst file, the Options radio selection is relatively unimportant. If re-using an old name, Replace duplicates ... is suggested to prevent duplications of all entries.
  9. Click Finish.

  10. In the "Create Microsoft Personal Folders" you can simply click OK.

    Install Outlook:

  11. If installing Microsoft Office in its entirety, this step will be taken care of. Be sure to do a complete installation.
  12. If installing only the Microsoft Outlook component, be sure to do a complete installation following the prompts on the Office installation CD.

    Launching Outlook for the first time:

  13. To open Outlook, double-click on the Outlook icon on the desktop (or launch from Start > Program Files).
  14. Outlook may ask whether it should be used as the default mail client. You can check yes or no at your discretion.
  15. Outlook will prompt you to configure a new mail account. On the first screen, click Next.
  16. On the second screen of the Account Configuration wizard, verity the Yes radio button is selected and click Next.
  17. On the Server Type screen, select the IMAP radio button and click Next.
  18. On the Internet E-mail Settings screen, enter the incoming and outgoing server addresses as below:
    1. Incoming mail server: imap.ndsu.nodak.edu
    2. Outgoing mail server: smtp.ndsu.nodak.edu
    3. Click Next.


  19. On the final screen, click Finish.
  20. Finally, you may be prompted to enter your full name and initials. This is an "auto-fill" value that all of the Microsoft Office applications will use in the future.

    Restore Outlook data:

  21. If you saved Outlook data in step 1 and want to restore it, go to File > Import and Export.
  22. In the Import and Export Wizard, select Import from another program or file. Click Next.
  23. On the next screen, select Personal Folder File (.pst) in the "Select file type to import from:" box. Click Next.
  24. Select a file to import by clicking the Browse button and then browse to the location of the .pst file saved in step 6. Click Next.
  25. In the "Select the folder to import from" box, select the folders that should be imported. They can be deleted later if necessary, so often it is easiest to select the highest level.
  26. Check the Include Subfolders checkbox.
  27. Click Finish to complete the import.

  28. Verify that address books and email folders are populated with user information.
    1. If possible, complete this step before formatting an old computer.
