Q. What can I do to ensure that my computer is configured correctly for the new DST dates?

A. Most campus computers were updated in early 2007 to handle the change in Daylight-Saving Time. If you are not sure whether your computer was updated, see the information below or call the ITS Help Desk at 1-8685 or e-mail NDSU.HelpDesk@ndsu.edu

Q. What about Windows operating systems?

A. Windows Vista includes the correct Daylight Saving Time dates. Other Windows systems prior to Windows XP SP2 (XP with service patch 2) are generally not supported and changes will have to be made to the system manually or the clock manually reset. This includes Windows XP SP1 or without service packs, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows 98. Microsoft also has advisories for users of Windows CE and Windows Mobile.

Q. What about the Mac?

A. Updates for Mac OS X have been included in the auto updates so current versions (10.4.6 and up) include support for the new dates. Versions of OS X prior to this and OS9 users will have to manually change the clocks in the Mac when the time comes.

Q. Will I have to make these changes every year?

A. Yes and no. If you have made advance appointments in your calendar for future years that fall in the four "new DST weeks" you should adjust those. But once you get all your affected future appointments fixed you shouldn't have to worry about appointments you add to the calendar from then on (unless the law changes again).

Q. What specific steps should GroupWise users follow?

A. Virtually all installations of GroupWise have been updated. GroupWise calendar users who did not apply this update in spring 2007 should follow these steps:

  1. Be sure your PC has the Windows DST patch. See the Q&A on the Windows DST patch.

  2. Inspect the calendar between the following dates:
Second Sunday in March - First Sunday in April
    (March 9, 2008 - April 6, 2008)

Be sure to check future years with events already scheduled.

Events affected by the changes will usually appear an hour later than they should be in the schedule during the dates above.

Novell suggests the following specific steps for correcting the entries:

    Adjusting Posted Appointments:
    i. Drag and drop the appointment to the new time
    - or -
ii. Open the appointment, modify the time, then post.

    Adjusting Sent Appointments:
    i. Drag and drop the appointment to the new time. When prompted to edit, choose no. The old appointment is retracted and the new one sent.
    - or -
ii. Select the appointment. Choose the Resend menu option. Modify the time (and other changes if desired) then click Send. Choose Yes to retract.

    Adjusting Posted All-Day Events:
    i. Drag/Drop the all-day event onto the same day.
    - or -
ii. Open the item, click the all-day event check box, then click Post.

    Adjusting Sent All-Day Events:
    i. Select the all-day event. Choose the Resend menu option. Click the all-day event check box, then click Send. Choose Yes to retract.

Adjusting Received Appointments or All-Day Events:
    1. Contact the organizer and ask him or her to adjust and resend the item.

  3. Reset your work schedule time zone as suggested by Novell.

The current work schedule time zone is displayed next to the "Work Schedule" group box title on the Tools | Options | Date and Time dialog. Even if the work schedule time zone displays correctly, performing the following steps force an update that ensures that the correct time zone information, along with DST transition rules, is stored correctly.

    i. In the GroupWise client choose Tools | Options | Date and Time...
ii. Change the Work Schedule - Start and End time values to something different.
    iii. Click OK.
iv. Choose Date and Time... again.
    v. Set Start and End times back to the original or desired values.
    vi. Click OK.
    vii. Click Close.

Q. What about Linux, Java, Palm OS and other software?

A. Any software or system that tracks times and dates and provides automatic adjustments for Daylight Saving Time is likely to be affected by the change. Please consult the support sites for the software or system for more information.

Linux users should refer to the support site for their distribution for more information.

The Sun Developer' Network has an article about solutions for Java Runtime Environments and issues for Java applications.

According to a note about DST on the Palm Web site, the Palm OS used on some personal digital assistants does not generally provide for automatic time zone changes and the time should be adjusted manually at the appropriate times. However, smartphones such as the Treo 650 may provide an option to automatically set the time from the phone network time and will then automatically adjust.
