What is Novell?

At NDSU, Novell file and print services give you a safe location to store files and an easy way of sharing files with other members in the department.

How do I request a Novell account?

As of late Fall 2005, NDSU automatically generates a service called "desktop_auth" for all Staff, Faculty and Students. This service is created with a randomly generated password. In order to use Novell for the first time, you will need to log into the Enroll page at http://enroll.nodak.edu. and change your current password.

To gain access to your departmental shared drive please contact the Help Desk (231-8685x1) with the information of your department. The request will be verified with your department head before it is processed.

Students:

  • If accounts are needed to access a departmental shared drive, the student's supervisor needs to call the Help Desk (231-8685 x1) in order to request an account and to specify what access permissions are necessary.
  • It is important to notify ITS if the student no longer works for the department so that file access can be terminated.

What if someone in my group is leaving the University or is moving to another department?

As with all other IT services at NDSU, it is the responsibility of each department to notify ITS as soon as possible when an employee leaves the University. Accounts must be modified to have the appropriate permissions or be removed entirely upon any personnel changes. This is to protect NDSU resources as well as departmental data, and applies to all faculty, staff and students.

In cases where a move is being made from one department to another, it is important to notify ITS in order to get proper permission changes made in a timely manner.

How can I request access to specific folders owned by other users?

In order to gain access to a folder owned by another individual or group, you can call the Help Desk (231-8685 x1) and request to get access to that folder. Before this is processed, ITS will verify that you have permission to access this file either with the owner of the file or a department head.

How can I install the Novell client?

If you want to install the new Novell client yourself, you can download and install the client from the Web. You should close all other applications before continuing.

  • Windows 2000/XP users, click here and select Run.

Select Run again.

Setup will copy files to your local computer.

Select Install Upgrade.

You will be required to reboot.

Can I use the Microsoft client for Novell?

No. The Microsoft client for Novell uses clear text passwords, and the new Novell servers do not accept clear text passwords for security reasons.

Are there quotas for file space in Novell?

Quotas are enforced on the Novell shared drives. Please reference the Novell quota page for more information.

What are the S:, U: and X: drives?

Common
S

Department Shared Drive

Each department electing to do so, will have server space dubbed the "shared drive." Different departments' S-drives are located on different servers.

U

Individual user directories

Each Novell user has server space for their own files. These are not shared, but are useful for keeping important documents in a safe location.

W

Web

This is for users who have WebDev accounts so that they can access their web files using Microsoft Explorer. This does not access a Novell shared server, but rather the web server.

Special
R

Special applications

If there are special applications that your department uses, they will be on these drives.

T

Special non-Novell applications

X

Cross-departmental shared drive

These shared drives are for departments that need to share data with other departments.

How do I know my Tree and User Context?

With the new version of Novell, your server, tree and context should be automatically configured. If you find this not to be the case, please contact the Help Desk (231-8685, Option 1).

If they are not configured, please use the following contexts:

All users EXCEPT for ALA Students use:

USERS.NDSU

ALA Students ONLY use:
