What to do when Novell drives do not map

This document tells you what to do if Novell Drives do not map or Novell login fails even when a network connection is present. It assumes that you are to have access (permission) to the drives or that they have worked before.

If you have questions with any step of this process, please stop and call the Help Desk for assistance. Performing this maintenance incorrectly could result in damage to your system including networking problems or inability to boot.

If your Novell drives are not mapping:

  1. First verify that you have network access.
    1. Open up web pages that you have not visited before, such as cnn.com or nytimes.com. If these do not work, your internet connection is most likely not functioning. Verify that cables are connected securely and test again. If you believe your network access has been blocked, you can call the Help Desk at 231-8685.
  2. Verify that you are logged into Novell.
    1. Log out of the computer and log back into Novell.
    2. Verify that the "Workstation Only" checkbox is NOT checked.
    3. If any error messages appear, it may be because the Novell servers are down for maintenance. If you have questions about error messages, please call the Help Desk at 231-8685.
  3. If you successfully log in to Novell but not all drives map, DNS entries may need to be edited to enable this connection.
    1. Right-click Network Places.
    2. Right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties.
    3. Open the Properties for TCP/IP.
    4. Click the Advanced button.
    5. Go to the DNS tab.
    6. Select the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order):" radio button.
    7. Click the Add button.
    8. Type "ndsu.nodak.edu" in the Domain suffix box and click the Add button.
    9. Repeat, entering "nodak.edu"
    10. Click OK in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window and Local Area Connection Properties window. Log out of the workstation and log back in.
  4. If drives still do not map, you may need to reinstall all networking components on the computer.
    1. Uninstall the network card.
    2. Uninstall TCP/IP (for Windows 2000).
    3. Uninstall Client for Microsoft Networks.
    4. Uninstall Novell -- if you do not know how to uninstall this, please call the Help Desk at 231-8685 to submit a trouble ticket. Do not use Add/Remove Programs to remove Novell, as this may corrupt the computer operating system.
    5. Restart the computer.
    6. Reinstall the above components.
