Operating System: The software on the computer that executes the commands for opening files, running other software such as Word or Internet Explore. Examples of operating systems include Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Macintosh.

Service Pack: An addition to the operation system software that provides for extra features, upgrades for additional security protection, and/or upgrades to enhance the performance and efficiency of your machine. Quite often, these Service Packs are required before you can install any type of update or patch to your machine. The installation of new software often requires the installation of the most current Service Pack in order for it to operate at its maximum performance.

Trojan: A file that hides a worm or virus and can be received through the e-mail disguised in a file such as a JPEG (picture). When you open the JPEG, a code is executed and it does the same as the worm and virus listed below.

Virus: An executable file or small program attached to an e-mail. When you open the attachment, it executes in the background and operates much like the worm.

Windows Critical Updates: These are patches and fixes design to fix flaws in your operating system. These flaws usually affect the performance and efficiency of your computer.

Windows Critical Security Updates: These are updates and patches that fix problems that may compromise or damage your computer. They are often related to vulnerabilities (weak places in the coding of the operating system) that can be exploited through the use of computer worms, viruses, and Trojans.

Windows Security Roll-ups: These are all of the patches and updates from previous vulnerabilities. These are applied as a single update when Microsoft determines through a scan of your system that you have not kept current with the latest updates.

Worm: A program received through an e-mail or the Internet. Opening the e-mail or the Internet starts the worm. It then locates all of the e-mail addresses you have entered into your contacts or address lists and sends itself out to these addresses.
