Printing from your laptop in clusters

Students, staff and faculty are able to print to some of the cluster printers on campus (see the printer locations table below). These printers are in the managed printing program. Jobs will remain in the print queue for one hour and the job will need to be released using the release station next to the printer. To print via the campus wireless network, a secure wireless connection is needed. Please see the ITS Wireless Security web page for directions on how to do this.

Note:
To locate your print job on the release stations; you will need to know your computer name and it should be unique.

Finding your computer name

Windows XP and 2000:

  1. Click Start and right click on the My Computer icon
  2. Select Properties
  3. Click Computer Name
    1. If you need to change your computer name
    2. Click Change to change you computer to a different name
    3. Type in a new computer name (example: Petes_Computer)
    4. Click OK
  4. Click OK to finish
  5. If you changed your computer name you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect

Windows Vista:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click System and Maintenance
  4. Click System
  5. Click See the name of this Computer
    1. If you need to change the name of your computer, click Change Settings
    2. A new window will be displayed. Here you can rename your computer
    3. Click Apply
    4. Click OK

Mac OS X:

Your computer name will be the DNS name your computer was assigned when you connect to the campus network (ie, dyn57-125.res-hall.ndsu.nodak.edu). This name may change each time you connect to the campus network or as you move around campus.

  1. Open a Finder window
  2. Open the Applications folder
    1. Open the Utilities folder
    2. Open the Terminal application
  3. A black screen with a cursor should appear
    1. Type hostname
    2. Your computer name will appear on the next line
  4. Quit Terminal

Setting up your printer

Windows XP and 2000:

  1. Go to the Start menu
    1. Open the Control Panel
    2. Double click Printers and Faxes
  2. Double click Add Printer
  3. Select Local printer attached to this computer
    1. Make sure Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer is unchecked
    2. Click Next
  4. Under Select a Printer Port
    1. choose Create a New Port
  5. Where it says Type of port
    1. select Standard TCP/IP Port
    2. click Next
  6. The TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard will come up
    1. click Next
  7. Add a Port
    1. In the Printer Name or IP address box type goprint.ndsu.nodak.edu
    2. In the Port Name box type in a unique name for the port
      1. Recommended names would be the location of the printer from the table below
      2. Remember the name you choose as you will need it later
    3. Click Next
    4. If asked about additional port information required, choose Standard Network Card or Generic Network Card
    5. Click Next
  8. Click Finish
  9. Using the information provided in the printer list at the bottom of this page match the Manufacturer and printer types shown. If the correct printer is not listed you can go to hp.com and download a PCL version of the driver.
    1. Click Next
  10. In the name field change it to something that will allow you to recognize which printer it is.
    1. Click Next
  11. If prompted to share: Do not share
  12. Select No to printing a test page
    1. Click Next
  13. Click Finish
  14. Right click on the printer that you just made
    1. Select Properties
  15. Click on the Ports tab
    1. Select the Port Name you created earlier
      1. Make sure you keep it checked
    2. Click Configure Port
      1. Under Protocol check LPR
      2. Under LPR settings click LPR Byte Count Enabled
      3. Type in the queue name of the printer to connect to (see printer locations table below)
    3. Click OK and OK/Close
  16. You should now be ready to print

Windows Vista:

  1. Go to Start Menu
    1. Click Control Panel
      1. Click Printers
      2. Click Add a Printer at the top of the window
  2. Click Add a Local Printer
    1. Click Create a New Port
      1. Select Standard TCP/IP Port
      2. Click Next
  3. Make sure that the Device Type is TCP/IP Device
    1. In the Printer Name or IP address box type goprint.ndsu.nodak.edu
    2. In the Port Name box type in a unique name for the port
      1. Recommended names would be the location of the printer from the table below
      2. Remember the name you choose as you will need it later
    3. Uncheck Query the printer and automatically select the driver
    4. Click Next
  4. If asked about additional port information required,
    1. Choose Standard, and select Generic Network Card
    2. Click Next
  5. Using the information provided in the printer list at the bottom of this page match the Manufacturer and printer types shown. If the correct printer is not listed you can go to hp.com and download a PCL version of the driver.
    1. Click Next
  6. In the name field change it to something that will allow you to recognize which printer it is.
    1. Click Next
  7. Select Do Not Share Printer
    1. Click Next
  8. Select No to printing a test page
    1. Click Next
  9. Click Finish
  10. Right click on the printer that you just made
    1. select Properties
  11. Click on the Ports tab
    1. Select the Port Name that you created earlier
      1. Make sure you keep it checked
    2. Click Configure Port
      1. Under Protocol check LPR
      2. Under LPR settings click LPR Byte Count Enabled
      3. Type in the queue name of the printer to connect to (see printer locations table below)
    3. Click OK and OK/Close
  12. You should now be ready to print

Mac OS X:

  1. Start System Preferences
    1. This can be found either in your dock or in the apple menu
  2. Click on Print & Fax
  3. In the Print & Fax control panel you will see a list of printers with a + and a - sign below.
    1. Click on the + sign to add a new pinter
    2. A new window will pop open
  4. Make sure that the IP Printer tab is selected at the top
    1. Set protocol to Line Printer Daemon from the drop down menu
    2. In the address field type goprint.ndsu.nodak.edu
    3. In the queue field put the queue for the printer you want to use (see table below)
    4. In the name field change it to something that will allow you to recognize which printer it is
    5. The location field can be left black or filled in with the location of the printer
    6. In the print using field choose the Manufacturer and printer type as listed in the table below. If your printer model is not listed you can go to the hp.com and download a PCL driver for that model.
  5. Click the add button
  6. You should now be ready to print
