This document tells you how to remote manage
computer workstations using ConsoleOne. This requires special
account permissions in order to function. If you believe you
should have remote management capabilities but currently do not
have the permissions required to remote manage, please contact the
Help Desk to submit a trouble ticket.
Functions not explained here should not be used without
first verifying with ZENworks administrators that systems will not
be negatively affected.
In order to use the features of Console One, you need to log
into Novell before launching ConsoleOne. This tool obtains
permission through Novell authentication.
- Alternatively, you can launch ConsoleOne and log in by going
to the File menu > Authenticate, and enter your Novell user
credentials as prompted.
When you first open ConsoleOne you will see an
interface similar to this:

Expand the NDSUNW tree to show the NDSU ZENworks
group and then the Workstations group. The Workstations group
contains the computers at NDSU that you may need to manage.

Search for workstation
If you are unable to determine the full name of the
computer that you would like to connect to, you can search the
group for part of the name using the Find feature.
- Go to Edit > Find.
- Verify that the "Find in" is the
NDSUNW.ZENworks.Workstations.NDSU (will be auto-selected if you
choose find while viewing the Workstations group).
- Enter the part of the name you know sandwiched between
asterisks/stars/*.
- Common search queries may be the building number and room
number, such as *25236* to find a computer in IACC 236, or
the NDSU inventory number, such as *123456*.

Computer management can be performed on a per-user
or per-computer basis.
- This means that you can connect to a computer by computer
name or connect by Novell user name (if the Novell user is logged
in to only the specific computer that assistance has been
requested at).
- If connecting by user, follow the same procedures as for
connecting to a computer; issue commands to the user item rather
than the computer item in the ConsoleOne. Users are located in
the User group.
Remote
Control
This is the content menu for a computer in
ConsoleOne. The primary function you might wish to use ConsoleOne
for is to remote control workstations on NDSU campus.
- Remote control does not require any users to be logged in
when you connect. However, if no one is logged into the
workstation, you will still need to provide a Windows
username/password.
In order to remote control a computer:
- Right-click the computer listed in ConsoleOne.
- Select Actions > Remote Control.
- ConsoleOne will attempt to connect to the remote computer
using ZENworks. If connection is successful, you will be able to
control the workstation.
- If the computer is not turned on, you may receive an
error message indicating that the workstation could not be
reached.
- Common key combinations, such as CTRL-ALT-DEL can be sent by
clicking the buttons at the top of the remote control
window.
- Note: If you try to remote control a workstation and the
connection times out, it is quite likely that the Windows
Firewall on the remote computer is blocking the connection.
Verify that the Windows Firewall has port 1761 opened.
Additional information on the Windows firewall, including how to
open a port, is available here.
Remote
Wakeup
In the event that a computer is not powered on when
you need to connect, ConsoleOne can issue a Remote Wakeup
command.
- Please note that this feature will function only if "Wake on
LAN" has been enabled in the computer's BIOS.
- Please note that this feature requires additional
permissions. If you require this type of control, please
contact the Help Desk to submit a trouble ticket.
To remotely wake up a computer:
- Right-click the computer listed in ConsoleOne.
- Select Actions > Remote Wakeup
File
Transfer
This feature allows you to transfer files to/from the remote
workstation in a ftp-like fashion. It is useful for placing an
executable on a remote workstation that can assist with problem
resolution.
- Please note that this feature requires additional
permissions. If you require this type of control, please contact
the Help Desk to submit a trouble ticket.
To file transfer:
- Right-click the computer listed in ConsoleOne.
- Select Actions > File Transfer.
- Click-and-drag the files to transfer.
Remote
Execute
This feature allows you to execute programs on the
workstation through a command-line interface.
- Unless silent options are used, any executables that have
pop-up messages for progress, EULA notices, et cetera, will still
be displayed on the remote machine.
- Command-line execution is required; any executables that can
function only by double-click can not be run using this
tool.
- Please note that this feature should be used only with user
permission in non-security-related situations.
To remote execute:
- Right-click the computer listed in ConsoleOne.
- Select Actions > Remote Execute.
- Enter executable path (on the remote workstation) and any
tags necessary to run the program as desired.
