Personal Response System

A Personal Response System (PRS) is a tool for active learning in the classroom through 100% student participation in question-and-answer sessions. The technology is similar to audience response systems used on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and "America's Funniest Home Videos."

Important Announcement:

Starting fall semester 2007, NDSU will use only radio frequency equipment for PRS. In the past, we used infrared technology, which required cabling and multiple receivers to handle larger classrooms. With the radio frequency model, one receiver can process over 2000 responses in seconds. The new student transmitters tell students when their response has been received by the system. For more information about this change, take this link to view the handout from the related training seminar and/or contact Nancy Lilleberg. (701 231-7140 /  nancy.lilleberg@ndsu.edu)

The NDSU pilot PRS project produced good survey results:

  • To "I do more thinking during PRS classes than in lecture classes," 82.1% respondents agreed or strongly agreed.
  • To "some PRS questions make me try hard to make sense of the subject matter," 89.7% agreed or strongly agreed.
  • To "I prefer the more traditional lecture approach over the newer PRS approach," 91.4% disagreed or strongly disagreed.

(Survey results from Dr. Jeffery Gerst.)
