Some individuals have installed wireless routers in offices and residence halls that are providing unauthorized access to the Internet. This activity is in violation of NDUS Policy 1901.2.
Effective April 21, unauthorized wireless routers on campus will be blocked.
Use of unauthorized wireless routers to share network access is specifically forbidden, as described in NDUS Policy 1901.2 on Computer and Network Use:
3.5.1 Sharing of Access
Access to computing and networking resources, computer accounts, passwords, and other types of
authorization are assigned to individual users and must not be shared with others.
-and-
3.5.2 Permitting Unauthorized
Access
Authorized users may not run or otherwise configure software or hardware to
intentionally allow access by unauthorized users.
NDSU policy prohibits use of unauthorized network devices:
NDSU Policy 710
In order to protect the campus data networks, NDSU reserves the right to control network access.
Procedures may include forms of registration and/or authorization before devices are able to access the
network. In the event of imminent threats or network disruption, it may also be necessary to temporarily
block specific types of network traffic or isolate portions of the network. Devices may be removed from
the network or have network access blocked without notice if they pose a threat to the network, the
device itself, or the user(s) of the device. Examples of reasons why a device might be removed from the
network, or blocked include, but are not limited to, the following:
5.2. Network addresses are unauthorized, misappropriated or have been modified to avoid restrictions.
5.3. A device does not meet current device requirements.
5.4. Or a device poses a threat to the network or the user because of vulnerabilities, compromises, incompatibilities with the network, or other reasons.
ITS is aware that some of these routers were intended to provide service to locations beyond the range of NDSU's wireless network. If blocking a wireless router will cause a hardship in this regard, please e-mail NDSU.HelpDesk@ndsu.edu or call 231-8685 as soon as possible.
We will do our best to ensure that legitimate users are not removed from the NDSU network when unauthorized equipment is blocked. To request assistance in maintaining or extending wireless service to a specific area on campus, please fill out the ITS Wireless Access Point Authorization Request Form.
Please e-mail NDSU.HelpDesk@ndsu.edu or call 231-8685 if you have questions.
