Mission Statement

Student Technology Services furthers the ideals of North Dakota State University and Information Technology Services by employing qualified students for the support of NDSU information technology needs. STS fosters student leadership and success by facilitating career and professional development through work-based learning.

Goals of the STS Program

• Integrate all technology services and support provided by students into a single consistently managed program
• Build a more unified work force
• Enhance training opportunities for student employees
• Enhance communication between ITS administration, workgroups, and student employees
• Develop more equitable and consistent hiring practices and pay scales
• Empower students and prepare them for future careers
• Provide a higher level of IT service for the NDSU campus

Origins of the STS Program at NDSU

Several campuses around the country (Oklahoma State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Washington State University, South Dakota State University-Brookings, and St. Louis University) have implemented successful STS programs. These programs are staffed and managed by students.

In June 2004, nine ITS staff members (students and full-time staff) attended the Student Technology Services Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The staff brought back valuable information that was utilized as the STS program was developed at NDSU.

ITS has a long and successful history of employing students who provide a wide variety of core technology services for the NDSU campus. With a solid foundation of student employment already in place in ITS, the STS program enables ITS to move to the next level in student-supported IT services.
