The Statistical Consultant position is a graduate assistant position jointly funded and managed by the Department of Statistics and ITS. This position reports to the full-time Statistician within ITS. Typically there are 2-4 positions (representing 30-40 hours/week) available during any spring or fall semester. Typically only one 20 hr/wk position is maintained through the summer. The number of appointments depends on available funding and the discretion of the managing Statistician and the Chair of the Department of Statistics.

Statistical Consultants are expected to have a breadth of background in various areas within the discipline of Statistics. Because of this, most successful candidates are hired as PhD students although a number of advanced Masters level students have held the position through the years. There is no formal 'training' for occupants of these positions. The managing Statistician is usually available to provide guidance as needed during performance of consulting duties by the Statistical Consultant. All appointments are made by joint decision of the ITS Statistician and the Chair of the Department of Statistics.

The Statistical Consultant Graduate Assistant's duties include :

Consult with faculty and graduate student clients, provide statistical assistance including:

• Answering general statistical and data analysis/data management questions.
• Recommending proper statistical techniques for specific data analysis problems.
• Recommending data collection and data storage solutions leading to subsequent appropriate statistical analyses.
• Recommending appropriate methods of presentation of the results.
• Debugging SAS programs as needed.
• Performing complete statistical analysis of client data, typically using SAS. Provide client with adequate background to understand statistical results so they can report the results professionally in their thesis, reports, or manuscripts.

Minimum Requirements for Employment:

• Knowledge of introductory through intermediate level statistical methods (e.g., regression and ANOVA, multivariate methods, discrete data analysis methods).
• Knowledge of SAS, ability to program using SAS.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.

Preferred Requirements for Employment:

• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to comfortably interact with faculty and graduate student clients.
• Initiative to investigate unfamiliar statistical techniques when standard methods are inadequate.
