STS Manager in Training

Hours per week: 10-20
Starting Wage: $9.00/hour
Reports to: STS Manager


The Student Technology Services (STS) manager in training is the entry-level position for the STS management team in preparation for an STS management position. The manager in training assists the STS manager and personnel manager with tasks while learning the skills and responsibilities of the management positions. The manager in training would be involved both in human resources activities such as recruiting, interviewing, and hiring, and other management activities such as employee orientation and leadership training. At the end of the training period (typically one semester), if performance is satisfactory, the manager in training will be promoted to an STS management position and receive the appropriate pay increase.

The STS manager in training will work 15-20 hours per week, with the majority of hours worked between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to allow for adequate communication with STS and ITS personnel. STS management positions are cooperative education assignments. Once promoted to an STS management position, the employee will register for the assignment through the Cooperative Education Program in the Career Center. ITS pays the tuition charges for the cooperative education credits. The assignment is renewed each semester, and candidates should be able to commit to at least two semesters, and preferably beyond.

The STS manager in training will assist STS management with the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Human resources activities including recruiting, processing applications, scheduling and conducting interviews, developing and conducting orientation and training
  • Schedule and develop professional development activities
  • Update and maintain STS Web site and STS Blackboard site
  • Plan and coordinate STS events
  • Staff display table at PR events
  • Attend periodic STS management team meetings
  • Actively participate in STS training
  • Update handbooks and other STS documentation as needed
  • Update and maintain student employee records
  • Actively participate in personnel issues that arise
  • Promote and administer STS work performance evaluation process each semester
  • Enforce STS work practices
  • Adhere to NDSU Human Resources policies
  • Maintain a high level of professional competency
  • Deal with sensitive situations and information in a confidential manner
  • Work safely
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications

  • Sophomore or higher standing
  • 2.5 G.P.A. or higher
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Willingness to learn
  • Leadership experience

Preferred qualifications

  • Human resources experience (recruiting, interviewing, etc.)
  • Supervisory/Management experience
  • Management-related or other appropriate academic courses or training
  • Marketing experience
  • Customer service experience

Computer skills: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Web development, databases
