NDSU Web Server Options

  1. Official NDSU Class Web Server: (classdev.ndsu.nodak.edu) Faculty members can request free temporary Web accounts for their whole class by sending a request to Dick Jacobson (dick.jacobson@ndsu.edu) and including their call number for their class. Dick requests a current class list for the class and creates a separate Web account for each student. These Web accounts are terminated after the semester ends.

  2. Official NDSU Web Server: (http://www.ndsu.edu). This is where all the official administrative NDSU Web pages reside, along with many of the instructional ones. Its host name is "webdev.ndsu.nodak.edu". Only faculty, staff and some student employees are awarded logins to this server.

  3. Personal accounts for students and student organizations may be housed on the ACM web server for a small annual fee. For more information, visit the ACM Web site.

Other Web Server Choices

There are many places on the Web where you can get free or cheap Web space. Free Web hosting usually means that advertisements will be displayed on your site. Some sites to check are:

Uploading Files to the Server

"FTP" stands for File Transfer Protocol, and refers to a simple program that allows you to transfer your files from your local site to the remote Web server site. Until you transfer your files, the rest of the world (or your class / teacher) cannot see them.

WS_FTP is an FTP program available on the cluster machines. It is also available as a free download for NDSU students, staff, and faculty.

Whether you use WS_FTP, or another FTP program, the information you will need is:

  • Your server name (also called host name)
  • Your user ID
  • Your password

If you are using a Web account from the ACM student Web server at NDSU, please go to their Web site for instructions.

If you are using a Web account you obtained from an Internet company like Tripod or Yahoo, check their site for instructions on uploading your Web files.
