What You Need to Know

Interactive Video Network technicians

  • The technicians are there to assist you while teaching in a video classroom. Please work with them and tell them what you require.
  • Technicians arrive ten minutes before each class.
  • For state and university meetings technicians are available for a fee.

Student registration
  • All students, both on-campus and off-campus should register using the Campus Connection. From NDSU's home page (www.ndsu.edu), select Campus Connection or click Campus Connection. Read and follow the instructions found there.

Class materials

  • Class materials should be on a Web site or some other course management software.
  • Exams should be mailed to remote sites at least a week ahead, or better yet, placed on Blackboard so the students can access them electronically.
  • Include the following information:
    • Course name
    • Date and time of the class
    • Specific instructions as to what the remote site is to do with the materials/exams.
  • Include a return postage-paid self-addressed envelope (or postage and a mailing label) for return materials.

Canceling a class

  • Please call your Site Coordinator immediately so it can be removed from the system.
  • Class time is charged to cover expenses. If you don't hold class and don't cancel, charged are incurred.

Hints for being heard and seen
  • Talk towards the microphone.
  • Keep your voice loud enough so your students can hear you.
  • Try to limit your movement around the room; too much motion is distracting and hard for the camera to follow.

Teaching from other sites
  • We strongly encourage you to teach a class at your remote sites--the students really appreciate it.
  • Please inform us, however, so arrangements can be made for technical support at that remote site.

Using Blackboard

  • Blackboard is a Web-based course management system that allows the instructor to place course materials online, set up tests, conduct online discussions, and much more.
  • It is available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Get more information on using Blackboard.

Showing videos

  • Be aware of and follow copyright and fair-use laws. If using commercial resources for a class, obtain permission or follow the laws pertaining to its use.

Streaming your class

Videotapes or CDs of your class

  • If you have permitted your class to be videotaped, it can be done if requested in a timely manner.
  • At the present time, we do not have the capability of making a CD.

Faxing

  • Use the fax only in an emergency.
  • Limit faxes to a few pages.
  • Please mail your materials instead.
  • Copying faxed material is very difficult since most video rooms do not have copy machines.

Schedule a practice session

  • To try something new in the classroom
  • Become more comfortable in the video classroom
